Wesley Fletcher

Wesley Fletcher

After graduating from Brown University in the spring of 2001, Wesley headed to East Africa as a member of the Young Adult Service Corps (YASC) with plans to teach classes at an Anglican boarding school in Uganda. Bushenyi, located southwest of Uganda's capital city, is the rural village housing Bishop McAllister Secondary School, where Wesley taught high school biology, English, and literature to lively, intelligent classes of indigenous youth. The experience of teaching without the traditional resources of textbooks and guides for classes, as well as interacting with classrooms of 85 students per teacher, put her creativity and cross-cultural skills to the test. In addition to teaching, Wesley had the privilege of working with Dr. Scott Kellermann and his wife Carol in their missionary medical practice with the Batwa pygmy tribes of the Bwindi area in Uganda. The Kellermanns served as Wesley's mentors during her year of service with YASC and have remained dear friends. Wesley now works as the Director of Youth Ministry at St. Francis Episcopal Church in San Antonio, Texas and credits her continuing missionary work abroad for her sense of call and purpose in life.
